Causes of Heat Stroke

Heat stroke happens due to prolonged exposure to the sun, when the weather is exceptionally hot and humid. When body's cooling system fails and it becomes overwhelmed with excessive heat, the condition occurs.

Dehydration due to excessive water loss (because of sweating) causes the maximum damage in this situation. When body's need of fluid is not replenished quickly, it begins to show symptoms of dehydration and may result in damaging effects.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke

The symptoms of heat stroke include

  • High body temperature
  • Nausea, vomiting,
  • Headache, fatigue and dizziness
  • Altered orientation
  • Flushed & red skin
  • Increased breath rate
  • Less urination
  • Dark coloured urine

Prevention & Treatment of Heat Stroke

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and being in a hot and humid atmosphere for long durations
  • Cover head and face, wear loose fitting and light coloured clothes and drink plenty of fluids
  • Try to remain indoors between 11 am to 4 pm, when heat is at its peak
  • Avoid becoming dehydrated
  • Stay away from vigorous physical activities during hot days
